about

Chopin never heard his music played on the pianos that we know today. When he was alive, pianos were smaller, softer, and used different materials. One of his favorite pianos was the Pleyel.

This recording was made in the Manifold Recording Studios in North Carolina on a Pleyel piano that was built in 1842, exactly the decade when Chopin wrote the 24 Preludes. Specifically, it is Piano no. 9758, made by Ignace Pleyel et Cie. in Paris.

The recording session unfortunately suffered from technical difficulties and there are intermittent pops that were introduced electronically into the signal. Nonetheless, we hope you enjoy this view into the sound of Chopin's music being played on a piano that Chopin may have actually played on himself.
